The Internet is full of would-be directors scratching and sniffing under every carpet and in every corner of society for an interesting story. What we have learned is that when it comes to American automobiles, there is no shortage of interesting stories. From Connecticut to California, an entire generation sits on a treasure trove of tired old cars and real stories that could be pulled from any popular movie or novel.
Jalopnik came across “Some Old Ford,” which is the story of an old man, how he came across a moonshiner’s Ford Galaxie 500, and why over 35 years later he still keeps it under a cover in the corner of his garage.
Filmmaker Ben Pender-Cudlip talked his uncle into digging out “some old Ford” from his garage and taking it out for another drive after what looks like many years of just sitting around. Ben’s uncle is not unique, as we know many men (and even a few women) who keep such sentimental treasures hidden away in their workshops.
This particular treasure is a ’64 Ford Galaxie 500 XL that Ben’s uncle bought around 1975 or ’76 after getting out of the army. His friend convinced him to take a ride in the car, which was owned by a local moonshiner and had been tuned up in ways we can’t even imagine. Without spoiling all the details, let’s just say that this five-minute short film is well worth every second, and it explains a lot about old car guys. Somehow, some way this car started right up, and damn if it doesn’t sound great. Will you still be holding on to your car 35 years from now?
