Using a pair of Precision Billet 62mm Standard turbochargers, 80 lb injectors and an external air to air intercooler, Classic Performance & Repair has built up a Shelby GT500 that punches out almost 850 hp on 91 octane gas. Other than the obvious changes, along with a new oil pan, the engine itself is stock.
How long do you think that bottom end will last? The builder is, of course, aware of the issues and in the video capped the boost at just over 20 psi. The stock connecting rods are popularly thought to be good to around 725 rwhp reliably or perhaps a little more. This video shows that their peak capacity is obviously higher, but did someone just pull the pin on that grenade?
Beyond this, it’s one thing to have the power and yet another to get it to the pavement. An extensive thread over at SVT Performance goes into great detail of the measures being put in place to make the most of this extra power. There’s no dount that having a project like this is inspiring and a whole passel of fun.
On the more challenging side, keeping up with the ponies is always an issue and whether its a question of gears, slicks, brakes or other upgrades, each of them challenges your wallet, and sometimes your personal life, in ways that everyone has to handle in their own way. There’s no doubt that this is an inspired project and that one we’ll be keeping an eye on until its done.
