Next April will mark the 50th anniversary of the first sale of a Ford Mustang, a car that began an automotive revolution and today is among the most desired and best-known automobiles in the world. Baby Boomers helped make the Mustang what it is today, but because of the disposable nature of cars, few people had the foresight to hold onto their original Mustang for the next 50 years.
Yet there are those few among us who bought their Mustang brand new and still own it today, and Edmunds reports that a new website is attempting to locate as many legacy 1964.5 Mustang owners as possible. How many original owners will hear the call?
The webpage, 50th-anniversary-mustang.com, was setup by Kathy Miller as a way to round up original Mustang owners whom have held onto their cars this entire time. An Ohio-based real estate agent, Miller is an original owner herself, having been given a Prairie Bronze Mustang as a high school graduation present. She is looking for fellow original owners in time for next April’s Mustang celebration extravaganza, and she’s found more than a few, like Phil Florio, who orderd his Hi-Po ‘64.5 at the tender age of 25, and held onto it for the next 50 years because it always made him feel young again.
Miller’s website also has a place for thsoe who have kept their Mustang in the family, as well as a place for those who “Wish I’d Kept It” to tell their stories. She is also interested in hearing from original owners of any first-gen Mustang, from the 1964.5 model all the way up to 1973, spanning almost 10 years and millions of cars.
Miller started her mission in 2009, locating 13 original Mustang owners in relatively short order. In the past four years, however, she has only found another 8, bringing the grand total of 21 original 1964.5 Mustang owners. How many more will turn up ahead of the Mustang’s 50th birthday bash?
