Ford Performance is the purveyor of “official” (not-so-after) aftermarket Mustang parts and accessories. We all know that. The Blue Oval guys and gals have been delivering some nice toys for auto enthusiasts and go-fast hobbyists for quite some time. These parts range from suspension components that give us better handling and feel on and off the track, to engine upgrades that give us reason to need those suspension upgrades. The engine upgrade kit pumps the 2015 and 2016 Mustang GT’s engine output to 627 galloping ponies. However, what many are asking is when will something like this be available for the Focus RS to bring its output up to let’s say the 500 horsepower mark?
Mustang GT Supercharger Kit Delivers 627 HP with Only 9 PSI Boost
Stock, the 5.0 in the 2015 Mustang GT generates 435 horses at 6,500 rpm (93 Octane pump gas). At 4,250 rpm it also generates 400 pound-feet of torque. That’s pretty impressive on its own. Now, head over to your Ford dealer, pick up the 2015 Mustang GT Supercharger kit and install it, or get it installed. Then get ready for 627 horses on that same 93 Octane Supreme pump gas at 6,900 rpm and a whopping 540 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. Pretty cool, huh? It’s doing that on only nine pounds of boost? Do a little extra tuning, bump that boost up and hold on for dear life.
Ford Performance Parts Part Number m-6066-M8627 comes with everything you need to install and get going close to light speed. Everything but the time and tools, that is. There’s even an air-to-liquid intercooler to optimize boost air density. The kit is street and emissions legal in all 50 US states and will fit on any 5.0-equipped Mustang with an automatic or manual transmission. Hey, it’s only just a bit under seven grand. Chump change for the go-fast crowd, right? The supercharger kit was developed with the help of the performance parts juggernaut Roush. We’re only mentioning this because the Mustang seems to get all the attention in the Ford catalog, and honestly we can’t help but wonder if the Focus RS will receive similar aftermarket attention from Ford.
We Want a 500 HP Focus!
When it first came out, the Ford Focus was a sporty-looking econo-car that got great fuel economy and put out “practically zero emissions” thanks to its “practically zero emissions vehicle” (PZEV) engine technology. The Focus we’ve been longing for may still get pretty good gas mileage, but it’s not sporting the PZEV engine.
The Focus RS is powered by the same 2.3-liter engine that sits in the Mustang EcoBoost. However, it puts out ten percent more power than the engine in the Mustang (345 horsepower, to be exact, with 324 pounds-feet of torque), thanks to a new turbocharger and some other goodies that it received. There’s also the possibility of bumping that 345 number up to 347 for fifteen second spurts.
Those ponies under the hood are also sent to all four wheels, thanks to Ford Performance’s all-wheel drive system with dynamic torque vectoring, selectable driving modes, and launch control. The driving modes feature even feature a Drift Mode that lets you get squirrelly, within what Ford considers reasonable.
Hearing that, however, leads one to ask “When are they going to bump it even more and give us an almost paper-light Focus RS (which they have already done) with a powerplant capable of churning out 500 horses or more? Sure, Ford Performance Parts has a cat-back exhaust system available for the ST but we’re hopeful that’s not an indicator of the Blue Oval’s intentions for the RS model. Questions remain around the RS and aftermarket support for it. Who will unlock the secrets of the factory turboso the engine produces upwards of that magic 500 HP number? We saw it last year at the SEMA show with the Mustang EcoBoost. How fast can we make the Focus RS? Will Ford offer the best parts through its catalog, or stick to only a small handful as it has done for the ST line?
