In the long history of the Ford Mustang, Ford has equipped it with a number of different engines, from feeble four-cylinders to ten-liter V8’s (the 1994 BOSS concept). But never a diesel engine. The old oil burners have a poor reputation for performance here in the states, even though those dastardly Europeans have figured out how to get good fuel economy and power from small diesel mills, and a few enterprising Americans have even crammed oil burners into their own Mustangs.
Jalopnik found this diesel-powered Mustang for their regular Nice Price or Crack Pipe column.
The craigslist ad where Jalopnik found this diesel Mustang project comes from Maine. There must be something in the water up there, because this isn’t the first crazy car project we’ve seen come from the big, barely populated state. It might be the coolest though. For the asking price of $3,900, this Mustang project comes with a 6.2 liter GM diesel engine, two polished turbos, external wastegates, an intercooler, and dual 3” side exhausts. There are a lot of custom features and work done throughout the car, and the engine and chassis alone would be worth the asking price. It makes us wonder if the turbo setup didn’t come off of eBay with such a low price.
There is plenty of work left to be done including the fuel system, a roll cage, and getting this Mustang running, and running well. But diesel Mustangs have been done before with some spectacular results, and it surely is an exclusive club. For $3,900, would you want to take on this unfinished project?
