Is the Camaro coming back?

CamaroThis might be the only time a bow-tie appears on the front page of this magazine! A concept Camaro was revealed by GM at the Detroit auto show. They said this concept is to get a feel for the public’s response and interest in bringing back the car. Heck, I think even Ford guys would like to see a worthy competitor back on the road. Right?

Here is the official release from GM Media:

DETROIT – Combining dramatic design and exciting performance, the Chevrolet Camaro Concept recaptures the spirit of one of the most popular sport coupes of all time and redefines the Camaro for new generations of fans. The goal is to make the sport coupe relevant to younger enthusiasts while retaining its appeal to its current fans.

Though only a show car at this point, the Camaro Concept is intended to explore customer reaction to design and engineering elements that might lead to an all-new version of the Camaro.

The long hood, short deck and wide stance of the Camaro Concept leave no doubt that it is a serious performance car. Those looks are backed up by a 400-horsepower aluminum small-bock V-8, a six-speed manual transmission, and a sophisticated chassis with four-wheel independent suspension.

Like its forebears, the Camaro Concept would be practical enough for everyday use. It features fuel-saving features like Active Fuel Managementâ„¢ cylinder deactivation technology, yielding highway fuel economy of 30 mpg or better. Its overall size is a comfortable fit for city streets and suburban parking lots, and its back seat provides occasional seating for two adults.

Lean, muscular design

Because of Camaro’s powerful heritage, the GM Design team chose a theme that pays homage to the original Camaro, while being instantly recognizable as an all-new car.

Said Bob Boniface, director of the Warren Advanced Design Studio, “The fact that the Camaro has been out of production for a number of years made it particularly important that the Camaro Concept honors the Camaro heritage in the right way.”

“The overall proportions, long hood and powerful fender forms say, ‘This is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive performance vehicle,’ ” said Tom Peters, design director, rear-wheel drive performance cars. The prominent front grille and hood bulge hint at the power of the Corvette-derived V-8 engine. Large wheels and tires, exposed high-performance brakes and prominent fender shapes signal that the Camaro Concept has the handling and braking to go with the powertrain.

Performance for the real world
The Camaro Concept features the latest generation of GM’s legendary small-block V-8. The 6.0-liter LS2 engine features an aluminum block and heads for light weight, and Active Fuel Management™, which shuts off four cylinders to save fuel when the engine is lightly loaded. This concept version of the LS2 is rated at 400 horsepower, yet it could also deliver more than 30 mpg at highway speeds.

The Camaro Concept’s six-speed manual transmission provides a wide spread of ratios for aggressive acceleration off the line, confident passing and merging and efficient highway cruising.
TheCamaro Concept features a sophisticated rear-wheel drive chassis. Its independent front and rear suspension features progressive-rate springs and gas-pressurized dampers. Four-wheel vented disc brakes with 14-inch rotors provide confident stopping under all conditions.

Well thats Cool! however if it looks like that were in trouble again LOL
Seems Gm always stuffs the Camaro with better handling ,braking and more base horsepower. And if they do it right it thell keep it lighter than the Mustang And after losing so many sales to the basic buyer on V6 Mustangs over the last 5 to 6 years( when the camaro was in production that is) I have a feeling that they will improve their car quite a bit.
Ford better be working on the same kind of fuel management system soon cause 400HP with 30 mpg on the Camaro its going to be a hard selling point agaist the Mustang. However having said that, Id Never buy one with it. Id rather know that my valvetrain isnt dependent on solonoids and other bizzare mechanical mayhem inside my engine.

Well now, come on, lets be realistic. If we ignore our enemy then he very well may kill us. If this story is true to the hype then we ( the Ford brotherhood) better be ready to deal with it.
Lets not bury our heads in the sand

Right?” not really! who is I? not bashing you (I) but show the new ferarris then! this isnt the speed channel! right?

    Typical GM stunt.

Make a car (camaro) so unreliable and crap ridden and push it out into the public until the public wont buy their crap anymore.

Then Kill off the camaro for a few years and let the bad vibes settle.

Re-incarnate the camaro again and pull the same money grabbing stunt.

How many times has GM killed the crap fest called the monte carlo only to let the dust settle then inflict another piece of Planned Obsolescence onto the dim witted sheep?

At GM, Planned Obsolescence is a never ending circle.

wow the camaro would smoke the mustangs out of the water if it was to come out! It would put the mustangs to shame and it would most likely convert many ford drivers to chevy! Feel the power of the Chevy!

I was a die-hard chevy fan and had many vettes, chevelle and z28′s but when I purchased my 2002 z28 camaro, it was crap! I was so disappointed the motor was pulled 2x’s with under 5,000 miles on the motor. I was heart broken, GM did a by-back. I am even disappointed bigger that they discontinued it, instead of making it better! Chevy you just gave way to the Mustang at least they are not quitters. In fact I bought a GT and had it for 1 year to buy a BMW!!! Keep waiting to see this new and exciting Camaro, but not much talk or information on it! Hey you know that saying S___ or get off the POT!!!
