Which Fords Made The Vehix List Of 11 Great Muscle Cars?

1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

I fully expect to get some angry comments for only including the 1970 and 2011 Mustangs. Look, I had a ’65 and it was a delight, but the 1970 Boss 302 was one of the most complete, best looking and best handling of the first batch of “small” Mustangs. They had racing and street cred while maintaining an obvious link to 1964 ½. Racing history of the Boss 302 is impressive, although some folks were displeased by the overall output of the 290 hp 302 C.I.D. V8. Truth is, it was an all-around giant killer. The balance, speed and overall control of the 1970 Mustang Boss 302 made it one of the most formidable vehicles of its time. And it looked mean, too.

2011 Ford Mustang 5.0

I’m convinced this deserves a spot on this list. The new 3.7-liter V6 puts out 305 horsepower. Although, for muscle car fans, the return of the 5.0 liter V8 is truly worth noting – especially the reported 412 horsepower this mill is said to produce. Let’s see, 412 hp in a car that will (probably) weigh in around 3,600 pounds. That makes for one of the best power-to-weight figures in the industry. Add to that better 6-speed manuals and automatics and I think this Mustang will likely blow some minds.

1970 Ford Torino Cobra

In some ways, the Ford Torino Cobra is a sad car. It has been passed over for values that the same-year Chevelle and ‘Cudas have garnered. It’s a shame because it was a good looking, fast, stop-light dominating machine that was rarely taken seriously. If you’re thinking this is the vehicle from Starsky and Hutch, you’re mistaken. That was an underpowered ’74. No, the ’70 Ford Torino Cobra and Super Cobra Jet were the real deal. A new body, tight suspension and the potential for drag racing dominance with the Super Cobra Jet’s “Drag Pack” made this Torino formidable. How about a 375 hp 429 C.I.D. Cobra engine? How does an optional Detroit Locker (4.30:1) axle grab you? I personally witnessed an unmolested ’70 Ford Torino Cobra knock the ¼ mile in a hair less than 14 seconds. The only modification: modern rubber. There were so many versions of the Torino, many forget this NASCAR-dominating machine, which is a shame.
