Mustang momentum continues to grow with the introduction of the uniquely styled, limited edition 2007 Mustang GT/CS ( California Special.) The $1,895 option package bows this summer nationwide on coupe or convertible in 5 colors. It’s the first of several planned Mustang “Feature Car” offerings from Ford in 2007.
Much like the 1968 GT/CS that offered Mustang buyers more aggressive styling that was “Inspired by the Shelby GT,†the new California Special also draws some cues from the 2007 Shelby. What’s more, it offers the kind of limited-production exclusivity that has made the original California Special such a big favorite with Mustang collectors over the years.
The 2007 version has an aggressive front fascia with an integrated chin spoiler that sits 1.5 inches lower than the Mustang GT to provide a larger air opening for increased cooling performance. Familiar “California Special†style bodyside racing stripes run from the front fenders across the doors and fade-out at the end of the door.
Out back, a unique rear fascia styled with less “tuck-in†features a lower air-diffuser design that is similar to the rear of the 2007 Shelby GT500 – itself inspired by the rear diffuser on the Ford GT supercar. As an added touch, the dual exhaust system on the new Mustang GT/CS sports bright, rolled tips for a cleaner, more refined appearance. The car will also come standard with the Mustang GT’s optional 18-inch polished aluminum wheels and performance tires. (Those seeking further differentiation can even add a hood scoop by ordering the GT Appearance Package.) The engine will don a special GT/CS cover, but like in 1968, the new GTCS will not have any more power than the stock GT.
Can anyone tell me how many 2007 GT/California Specials were produced? Ford tells me they don’t keep track of individual production numbers.
By Rod. December 21st, 2007 at 12:07 pmI got my gt/cs on jul 14. I am not driving it till the production numbers come out.Exhaust helped out the hp a lil cai and programer is the best bang for the buck.Till then ill drive my 93 5.0 coupe or 2002 gt moded.
By 3 to choose from. November 28th, 2007 at 11:19 pmI have had my GT/CS for two months and I receive at least 5-10 compliments a day for this car. WOW and the babes look at you from the corner of their eyes though they won’t admit it. For those who would like a little more HP, I installed a K&N cold air kit, 62mm BBK throttle body, Headers and I am patiently waiting for the MAF sensor for the 07’s. All that said, I have 384HP to the ground now and certainly expect more with the MAF sensor. I love you people at FORD!! My first Mustang is really one hot car!
By Blewbyyou07. July 1st, 2007 at 8:06 pmBought my Performance White GT/CS on 4/28/07. Can’t tell you how much I love this car. Perfect for the mid-life crisis! Always wanted another Mustang..wanted a new GT but couldn’t afford the Shelby. This fits the bill 100%. Can’t believe the looks and questions I get in this car! 300 HP with a 5 speed and 355 gear is enough for me….although I have ordered a cold air kit and Borla exhaust! Already won a trophy at my first car show! Now we are looking to buy a ‘68 CS car to restore to go with the ‘07. Did I tell you…I love this car? Awsome….totally awsome. Thanks Ford Motor Company.
By Vince. June 19th, 2007 at 6:29 ami just got my new 2007 cal special as a graduation present from my father, and i love the car, dont get me wrong but i think that it needs more power so im about to build this car up as fast and strong as i can get it. im goin to strive to obtain atleast 550 to 600 horsepower.
By shamrock. May 26th, 2007 at 9:33 pmgreat car lot fun.
By jerry. March 28th, 2007 at 6:34 pmI bought my 2007 GT/CS on 3/8/2007, no remorse, I’m loving the car more each day. I even got compliments from an F-430 Ferrari driver who pulled up next to me one day while cruising around Houston.
By mapv281. March 16th, 2007 at 6:42 amI bought my 2007 vista blue cali special a few days ago, and I love it! mine was without the GT appearance package, but the lines flow really well without the hood scoop. I love it! It’s definitely not a 100% tribute to the original ‘68, but it is a great improvement over the standard GT. I’m just glad that Ford offers a mustang to stand out from the pack of the regular production car for an affordable price. Why complain?
By d-nasty. February 19th, 2007 at 1:06 amI bought a brand new 65 and have restored a 67 coupe, 67 convertible, 68 GT 390 and currently have a 72 Mach 1 w/ram air. I had been admiring the new body style since they came out in 05. I bought my 07 GT/CS the first part of November. I am very impressed with the handling, power and comfort of the best Mustang built to date. After driving pickups for the last 20+ years as my daily drivers, it is really a pleasure to drive. Being somewhat of a mustang nut I highly recommend this car to anyone.
By Ron Ward. February 18th, 2007 at 7:29 pmdrove car today. to slow needs HP and it will be good to go i say368 will do!
By 2002 gts 12.81 QM houston. February 10th, 2007 at 8:19 pmThis car is awesome i bought a vista blue mustang gt/cs and it definitely gets looks from everyone and for those complaining about hp just add a few aftermarket mods and youll have all u need
By dave gills. February 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pmI purchased my california special the day after thanksgiving and my wife and i love it. I think it looks beter than the new shelby . dont get me wrong i would love to have a shelby. Anyway the car is just awsome, theres no comparison with the five speed
By 67mustangman. December 30th, 2006 at 8:07 pmI purchased the 07 gt/cs white Mustang and this car is awsome. There are alot of aftermarket parts out there to increase the HP and that is half the fun of it. I have about 345 HP now and hope to have 400HP soon. This car gets so many looks going down the street Im just glad I didnt buy a plain old GT stang,There could have been a few things Ford could have done differant on this car but why make it look like an old 68 gt/cs!!
By pursable. December 26th, 2006 at 7:59 pmI have black 07 GT/CS coupe and it’s a one-car car show. I’ve been chased down by a guy in a SC’d Maurauder, asked questions at stoplights by other Mustang drivers who wonder what the “cs” stands for, thumbs up from old guys and stares from the babes. Who could ask for more, besides the power to smoke the tires at will?
By matt. October 31st, 2006 at 7:19 pmWhat colors are available for the 2007 california Special?
By Chris Zerillo. October 7th, 2006 at 5:26 pmIt is unfortunate but many things are wrong about this car. The decals are not located correctly and are not designed correctly. The rear tail-lights should mimic the old style horizontal T-Bird tailights, not the current verticle jail-bar style….the tailights should sequentially light up. The horsepower should be higher. The original CS’s never were produced as a convertible. The car is so mis-styled in fact that even the national registry for CS’s does not recognize the new CS’s as being CS’s and will not allow the new CS’s to register in with the original CS’s. The new ones have been given their own forum and registry section.
When Ford decides to comemmorate a car they certainly don’t need to make the design an exact copy but they should at least get the major styling queues back to the original to be exact.
By Vista Blue GT. September 29th, 2006 at 5:17 ami just got my GT CS two days ago and absolutely love this car. i do need a little more power though and plan to throw on a roushcharger as soon as they release them for the 07’s.
By pablo. September 11th, 2006 at 6:06 pm“By the way, the only REAL scoops on Ford cars are SHAKERS, all other scoops are just for looks.”
Well, the side scoops were functional on the ‘94 and ‘95 Mustangs. One could argue if they were effective or not, but they indeed duct air to the rear brakes.
By Walt. August 2nd, 2006 at 8:59 amJust bought my GT/CS on June 20, 2006. I absolutely adore this car! No regrets here on the price, HP or look…I love it all. Besides much more than 300 HP, where are you going to unleash that? Not in the U.S.
By MoonHawk. July 6th, 2006 at 6:48 amI like it, just wish you could get it in the green color. It is a GT, but it stands out. For everyone else complaining about HP, go by a Shelby or a Stage 3 Roush, theres your HP. I wish it had at least 350hp myself, but I will take it at 300 with open arms. If your in the market for a new GT, and want something a little different, this is your car. I will be buying one. By the way, the only REAL scoops on Ford cars are SHAKERS, all other scoops are just for looks. At least ford is bringing back muscle, while Dodge and Chevy plan to in the next few years with the Challenger and Camaro, these mustangs are on the street and moving up now, thanks Ford motor company…
By Brian Atkins. July 2nd, 2006 at 8:00 pmI am the third owner of a 1968 California Special GT/CS. The color is sunlit gold with a 289 cu in 2 barrel. It has the cut out back valance with the dual tip exhaust.
I have recieved many awards with this car to include an Editers Choice Award from Hemmings in 2005. My car has appeared in three Mustang calenders and appeared in chapter three page 75 of Mustangs An American Classic by the auto editors of Consumer Guide. This book was published by Publications International,LTD. Lincolnwood, IL 60712
My question is, is it possible to get a 2007 mustang california special in the color sunlit gold, with gold nugget interior?
By Howard Phelps. June 24th, 2006 at 7:10 amThis car should have at least 360 hp. Bump the displacement if you have to. I would not buy one because of the marginal hp.
By Baton Rouge. April 15th, 2006 at 10:17 amwell i jus hope all of these other models have more than jus body mods done!!!
By norcalcougar. April 11th, 2006 at 5:51 pmOkay, so it’s just a matter of time ’til they bring back the Boss.
