This is news we have been waiting for! Today, Ford revealed their “EcoBoost” engine program. The engine will be direct injected, turbocharged, 4 and 6 cylinder motors which will offer 20 to 30% increase in fuel economy, equal reduction in emissions, yet the big power benefits of a turbo.
The 2009 Lincoln MKS will be the first to feature an Ecoboost engine. The 3.5L V6 will be twin-turbocharged and pump out an estimated 340 torque and horsepower. WOW! Fuel economy should be in the mid to high 20 mpg. A Ford Explorer concept car at this years North American International auto show was built to achieve 275 horsepower with a 4 cylinder turbocharged version of the Ecoboost engine.
EcoBoost’s combination of direct injection and turbocharging mitigates the traditional disadvantages of downsizing and boosting 4- and 6-cylinder engines, giving customers both superior performance as well as fuel economy.
With direct injection, fuel is injected into each cylinder of an engine in small, precise amounts. Compared to conventional port injection, direct injection produces a cooler, denser charge, delivering higher fuel economy and performance.
When combined with modern-day turbocharging – which uses waste energy from the exhaust gas to drive the turbine – direct injection provides the best of both worlds: the responsiveness of a larger-displacement engine with fewer trips to the gas pump.
Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, for example, can deliver upwards of 340-plus lb.-ft. of torque across a wide engine range – 2,000 to 5,000 rpm versus 270 to 310 lb.-ft of torque for a conventional naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V-8 over the same speed range. At the same time, this V-6 gives customers an approximate 2 mpg improvement and emits up to 15 percent fewer CO2 emissions to the environment.
Direct injection coupled with turbocharging allows for the downsizing of engines that deliver improved torque and performance. A small 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine has the capability of producing more torque than a larger 4-cylinder engine – nearly an entire liter larger in displacement – with better fuel efficiency.
Maybe I should turbo-charge my 351Cleveland, I might save a few MPG, oh and help save the world’s resources, like drag racing…….hahahahaha !

Wow, we can get an extra 2 mpg fuel economy with this incredible break through! Now using some voodoo math we can also state that is a 20% improvement! Next up is perpetual motion!

Incredible! There are actually people who don’t know that weather is cyclical? They actually believe that AlGore and his political agenda of globalwarming is real?? WOW?!!!! Man study a little history. For example, in the 1960’s schools were teaching that we were on the cusp of the next “Ice Age” and we should all be prepared, that is if we didn’t all die from a nuke war. Ha Ha. People are so STUPID.

Global warming is a total hoax! The Al Gore movie needs 12 retractions to be played in England’s schools to show the factual errors - but that is not mentioned here where it is gospel.
Fact - from 1998 to 2008 the global warming temperature models predict a 0.2 to 2.1F warming with 99.9% confidence. The actual global temperature DROPPED .4F. That is a fact.
Ford’s direct injection is a good thing to let us balance a need for hp with the ability to pay for fuel!
If you look up Junk science and hoax science like perpetual motion machines, anti-gravity, UFO’s, Big Foot, Loch Ness Monster, cold fusion you will see a place for “Man Made Global Warming” being made ready.

It’s finally what,s we been waiting for that street and track concept engineering a race car enthusiasm with some green/eco touch to it. the best of both world’s has come together. hehehehe cool

The next mustang engine will be the 6.0 Boss. Should be in the 09 F150 the the Mustang in the following year. Hot Rod mag did a small story on the engine specs.

You can make insane power with a turbo V6 so good for Ford. While off-boost, it will be a lot easier on the wallet to deal with $4 gasoline.

OMG I cannot believe the blatant ignorance I am reading in some of these comments. Global warming a myth? CO2 is not an emission that we are worried about??
Well, at least it is clear from the videos and general shift in public perception that the manufacturers are more educated and informed on the subject (thankfully).
James, dude, whoever you are you might want to crack open an introductory textbook on atmospheric science.

Yeah, rumor is they are talking about a TT V6 for the Mustang. Way to rice up the ’stang Ford! The import guys are going to laugh so hard at this…
By MikeH. January 26th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Well, between the Challenger and Camaro coming out, it’d be a bad move to throw in a turbo six to compete w/ Hemis or Gen IV V8s. Plus, Ford is expected to release a new larger engine family so it wouldn’t surprise me to see those engines make their way into the Mustang. But then again, Ford also wanted the Probe to replace the Mustang back in the 90’s so who knows…
As for global warming, youTube “The Great Global Warming Swindle.” Pokes a lot of holes in the manmade theory of global warming.

So, does this mean the mustang will get a turbo 4.6 also? Or will it mean that them mustang is going to get turbo 6 cylinders? Or are they going to leave the mustang alone so it can get the doors blown off of it by every sedan and cossover ford decides to make?

Hey Pinto71. First of all, most people know that Global Warming is not as big of an issue as the media makes it. Many of the people involved in the original debate years ago disagreed with it. It is just like anything else…a few make a big deal while the majority knows the truth. As said before…study Catalytic Converters. They do nothing for the decrease of CO2. One down side about direct injection. I work for VW Corporate and we have been using it since early 2006. They make a lot of power but because you do not have fuel spraying on the intake valve and cleaning it…you get a lot of carbon build up on the valves. The overlap profile of the camshaft and the purge regulator valve still let fuel into the intake despite the fact that it is direct injection and it gums up the valves. It can get so bad that it holds the valves open in the guides at first start up. The technology is very cool though.

Global warming…yea right!
Take a look at history…we are just in a warming trend just like in the 70’s, we were in a cooling trend. It’s cyclical. Somewhere in the bible it says there will always be a time to plant and a time to reap.
Go Ford go!! Get back in the game!!! Maybe we can beat the pants off of an EVO with this new stuff!!
By Barry. January 16th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Just hope this isn’t the death-nail of NA V8 engines…
By bassman97. January 15th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Finally the return of the original SVO platform. I see one of these in my driveway eventually. Ford shoud have stuck to their guns when they originally went with the small displacement and high power forced induction program. If they would have continualy improved on the SVO idea we would be much further in this kind of technology.

Guys the CO2 thing is way way overblown and in fact some Europeon scientist built a scale model that disproves that CO2 is a cause for so called global warming. Without CO2 we will cease to survive since photo synthesis is the source of our oxygen, requires CO2 and sunshine. Take a year of climatology and read some of the opposing views. These engines are very cool BTW
By kblackav8or. January 14th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
co2 is not a problem?? Its one of the biggest concerns of the world at this time. Global Warming ring any bells??
One of the biggest contributors of Global warming is excessive co2 emissions.
By 71hotrodpinto. January 14th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I think it is funny how in the video above he discusses co2. This is one emission that is not even considered to a problem. A catalytic converter reduces CO, HC, and NOX. Co2 is not an emission that our world is worried about. Nice

It’s been too long since FMC has made turbo engines. 88? This may be the deciding factor in their “Return to Profitability”. Weight reduction has been long overdue also. “4=6 6=8 4evr Ford”
