Microsoft paints their Pinto

PintoSince this is a Ford enthusiast publication delivered to you via your internet browser, we thought the recent analogy by one of Microsoft’s competitors, comparing the new Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) to Ford’s Pinto was extremely fitting.

HÃ¥kon Wium Lie, the Chief Technology officer of Opera - an internet browser alternative to IE, discussed Microsoft’s release of IE7 with ZDNet blogger Richard MacManus. He told Richard in a recent interview that Microsoft’s IE has been historically plagued with problems. “These bugs have been lingering and a pest to society.” In recent years several competitors to IE have taken a huge market share out of Microsofts dominance in the browser market. Web users no longer have to put up with poor support for CSS (cascading style sheets) for instance.

While HÃ¥kon credits Microsoft with making great efforts to improve their browser performance, he says the underlying machinery of the Internet Explorer browser will always be a problem. In this regard he compares Microsofts efforts to “doing a paint job on your Pinto.” The Pinto of course earned its bad rap as the symbol for 70’s era cheapness and poor automotive saftey.

We say forget about all the bickering and download (for free) FordMuscle’s recommended broswer, Mozilla Firefox. It would be like trading in your Pinto for a 2004 Cobra.

  1. BRING BACK THE CRUISIN WAGON W/ A TURBO 2.3

  2. I believe but cannot prove it, that the Pinto made people fart… Just kidding, the Pinto according to my recallection had a problem with the way the fuel tank was mounted, causing a major problem during a rear end collision. Lots of the smaller, older cars, like the Grimlin, were not very safe, but very cool. The Pinto’s gas tank sometimes exploded, and to avoid a large suit of any kind, or the cost of redesigning, they (Ford) trashed it. Now that out of the way, if they bring back the name, I’m sure they will screw up its design.

  3. Yeah I wondered if Ford would ever bring back the Pinto name. I would like to see it. It’s coming on nearly 30 years since its demise. I once owned one, sure it had it’s shortcomings but I thought it was great after I fixed it. Mine was a ‘79 hatchback you know it has that great big glass rear hatch it was unique, I liked it. Besides, a lot could be done with the logo, that cute little prancing Pinto was cool. I haven’t forgotten what got the Pinto it’s bad name but that kind of a long time ago. Bring it on. Ford needs to make some bold moves again their is too much competition now they need to distance themselves in a positive manner and make good cars again and seize the market away from the mostly oriental car makers if that can be done. Thanks. Mike Pliego

  4. Ford needs to bring back the Pinto name… except make it a real rice boy car, or maybe something like a Focus package that has all the wings, ground effects, neon lights, etc… that they’ll all go swarming to the dealerships to get. I think that would be hilarious on so many different levels… but then again, maybe I’m weird.
