The second quarter sales results are in and Toyota has passed Ford as the #2 automaker, by sales, in the United States. Toyota sold 241,826 vehicles in July, a monthly record for the company, giving it a lead of 487 over Ford, which sold 241,339 vehicles. Ford’s sales fell 32 percent, while sales at DaimlerChrysler fell 31.5 percent, and G.M.’s sales dropped 19.4 percent compared with last year, according to Bloomberg News. Toyota’s sales rose 16.2 percent. Amongst the Japanese automakers Honda was up 10% however Nissan was down 16% in sales for 2Q.
A sharp drop in truck sales is partially to blame. Ford truck sales were down 44% overall.
Sales of the F-series pickup, which has been the country’s best-selling vehicle for almost three decades, dropped 46 percent in July, while sales of its Explorer sport utility vehicle fell 51 percent last month.
As they rank today, GM is number one, Toyota number two, followed by Ford and then Chrysler in fourth place. Analysts speculate Toyota could overtake GM in the US market by the end of the year.
