When the Ford Crown Victoria was discontinued, police fleets all over America were left with three potential replacements from the three major automakers. Dodge offered a Charger, Chevy a Commodore-based Caprice PPV, and a Ford built a replacement Police Interceptor using the Taurus and Explorer as base vehicles.
Well it seems as though Ford’s long history of dominating the police fleet market will continue. Jalopnik reports that Ford’s police vehicles are proving very popular with fleet managers all over the U.S. looking to replace an aging fleet of long-obsolete Crown Vics.
Ford’s average Police Interceptor sales averaged more than 1,500 units per month, and January sales reportedly soared past 3,000 units. This no doubt has to do with all the goodwill Ford has built up with police fleets over the past few decades, though in terms of pure performance, both the Taurus and Explorer models have dominated the competition in almost every regard.
In comparison, Chevrolet delivered just 237 Caprice PPV models in January, and both deliveries and orders seem to be taking some time. Dodge hasn’t released sales numbers on the Charger Pursuit, which proved somewhat popular before the two Ford models stepped into the fray. Suffice to say though, it looks like Ford is once again dominating the police market, which means you know what cars you have to look out for.
