American muscle cars are famous for being powerful, loud, and smoking the rear tires. Can you imagine if the Ford Mustang had been front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive? We doubt it would have sold very well. Over the years car customizers have experimented with placing Mustang bodies on truck frames, creating in effect 4×4 Mustangs.
But this ‘65 Mustang found on Bring A Trailer is a different kind of 4×4 muscle car. Using a special 4WD system developed by Formula 1 engineers, this Mustang can spin all four-wheels while retaining its original chassis and suspension. Crazy, cool, or just kind of wacky?
Harry Ferguson developed a series-winning 4WD system for Formula 1 race cars during the ‘50’s and 60’s. In 1965 Ferguson bought three ‘65 Mustangs and attempted to develop a bolt-on 4WD system for the Ford Mustang. Called the Ferguson Formula, all three Mustangs would be equipped with a unique transmission and transfer case.
Alas nothing ever became of the Ferguson Formula system, and these three Mustangs remain the only working examples. This particular test car has just over 70,000 miles on it, and the asking price is £45,000, or about $70,000 U.S. With the recent advancements in 4WD and AWD technology, maybe it is time somebody developed an bolt-on AWD system for classic Mustangs, don’t you think?
