The advent of the Buick Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission was a revelation in convenience for drivers, and by the 1950s every automaker offered its own take on full automatic gearboxes. Over the next 50 years, most automatic transmissions still only offered three, then four forward gears, but the past decade has seen automakers put a great deal more effort into gearboxes as a way to increase fuel economy and performance.
We’ve been hearing rumors for some time that the Mustang could get a 10-speed automatic in the near future, and a document posted to Mustang6G seems to confirm that is indeed on the table for the 2018 model year.
The unofficial confirmation comes from a screenshot of Ford’s Microcat parts lookup system, which lists the 10R80 transmission as an available option for the 2018 Mustang. Ford is already offering a 10-speed transmission in the new F-150, a transmission the Blue Oval co-developed with General Motors. GM will offer that transmission in the new Camaro ZL1, so it makes sense that the 10-speed would find its way into the new Mustang as well.
Currently, the Mustang makes do with a six-speed automatic that’s been in service since the new 5.0-liter Coyote engine entered the picture in the 2011 Mustang GT. The new 10-speed is expected to boost both fuel economy and performance, although there is another interesting tidbit to be considered. This new 10-speed will also be put to use behind the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 engine in the new Ford Raptor. Although the Mustang already offers a four-cylinder, 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, adding the 3.5-liter motor to the fray could give Mustang customers something else to spend their money on.
Considering the 3.5-liter motor can make upwards of 600 horsepower in the GT, the next Shelby GT500 or Mach 1 Mustang might bring a new EcoBoost offering to the table. Who could have thought that an automatic transmission could be so exciting?
