It has been more than 20 years since Ford offered the Mustang with a hatchback option. While the Fox-body styling remains timelessly attractive, hatchback cars as a whole have fallen from grace in favor of crossovers. Shooting brake designs, however, have found a lot of fans among would-be buyers, and cars like the Ferrari FF have brought the shooting brake design from concept sketches to the streets.
But not every car looks good with a long roof and a hatchback design, and after seeing this rendering from X-Tomi Design, we’re convinced that the 2015 Ford Mustang looks better as a fastback. And if you disagree? Well you might want to get your eyes checked.
The 2015 Mustang is by and large viewed as a great successor to the S197 era of retro-styled Mustangs, bringing the pony car badge well into the 21st century. With Ford now focusing its efforts on becoming a globally-united automaker, the Mustang will be available in countries besides the U.S., in areas where different styles and consumer needs dictate different products. The Holden Ute did exceptionally well until the past few years, as Aussie buyers loved the utility and performance. But try selling the same vehicle in Europe, and watch sales not happen.
Instead, GM gave Europe the Vauxhall VRX8 Tourer shooting brake. Could Ford go down the same path with the 2015 Mustang, and offer it in a hatchback or shooting brake configuration? It seems even less likely than the chances of Ford offering the Mustang as a four-door. Only time will tell, as anything is possible in the new worldwide auto industry these days.
