Amidst the chanting of auctioneers and the rumble of vintage machines at the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, there was a big hiss in the Ford Performance booth. Today Shelby American took the wraps off a 750-horsepower, 10-second Mustang that celebrates 50 years of special machinery—the 2017 Shelby Super Snake.

Shelby will only create 500 50th Anniversary Super Snakes, which will start at $69,995 including the base car. If you already have a 2017 Mustang the package will set you back $36,795. (Photo Credit: Shelby American)
The 2017 Super Snake is a tremendous performance value.—Vince LaViolette, Shelby
“The 2017 Super Snake is a tremendous performance value,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations. “We fine-tuned our processes and materials to offer an agile, nimble and balanced car at a lower cost. A turnkey Super Snake starting at $69,995, plus taxes and fees, has more base performance content than any other version in our history.”

Differentiating the Super Snake package are unique styling updates in the form of a hood, rockers, spoilers, splitters, grilles, fog lights, rear tail panel and rear diffuser assembly, which were all designed using computer-aided design to ensure OE-style fitment.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that the latest Super Snake isn’t potent. As you’ll see in the specs sidebar, it is packed with upgrades from the likes of Borla, Ford Performance, Michelin, Wilwood and more.
The base Super Snake package is powered by a 670-horsepower Coyote 5.0-liter boosted by a Ford Performance TVS supercharger (left). If you want the option sheet to take your Snake up to 750 horsepower you can elect to add a Kenne Bell (not shown) or Whipple supercharger (right).

Part of the man’s spirit was about creating high-horsepower machines and the 50th anniversary Super Snake definitely delivers with a choice of two superchargers. The base Snake pumps out 670 ponies to the flywheel courtesy of Ford Performance’s 2.3-liter TVS supercharger, while an optional Kenne Bell or Whipple supercharger pushes its output to 750 horsepower.
“The 2017 Super Snake represents American muscle in the truest sense,” Vince added. “It delivers full-throttle excitement at every turn, all wrapped in a chiseled, handsome body. We designed every aspect of the car to be leaner and more functional than previous models. No other car offers so much performance and styling for the price.”
The performance is definitely impressive. Optioned with one of the bigger blowers, the 2017 Super Snake is said to run a 10.9-second quarter mile running on street tires and burning pump gas. It’s not just a straight-line machine, however. Shelby says it will also pull 1.2g on the skid pad.
The 50th Anniversary Super Snake is available in all the factory paint colors and each car earns a place in the official Shelby Registry. Better yet, they are also covered by the company’s limited three-year, 36,000-mile powertrain warranty.
