Widely regarded by many car collectors and historians as one of the best-looking cars of the pre-World War II era, the Cord 810/812 is a rare and expensive show piece. A real Cord, depending on condition and model, can easily fetch $150,000 on the market, and the highly rare examples can bring well over a quarter-million dollars at a sale. That’s not the kind of money most average car enthusiasts have to just spend on a new toy for their museum.

On eBay there is a Cord 810 for the common man, and that’s because it is based on a 1969 Ford Mustang. Some people probably don’t like it, to say the least it’s interesting, and probably the closest most of us will ever come to sitting in or driving anything bearing the name Cord.

This Mustang has a fiberglass Cord body-kit built by S.A.M.C.O., a company there is almost no information on. Most likely it was one of the many aftermarket parts or kit car makers that thrived briefly during the muscle car era. This fiberglass body-kit is, depending on whom you ask, either a faithful-as-possible, or an insult to an American original.

Taken for what it is though, a 45-tear old Mustang with a fiberglass body-kit meant to look like an 80-year old car, we think it is altogether a fun, different ride. The interior looks the part as far as seating and colors go, and under the hood is a mildly-modified Ford 302 engine, for which repair and performance parts are readily available. Just try going to your local parts store and asking for something for a real Cord, good luck with that.

This isn’t a ride for everyone, but if you’ve got a decent budget and some good skills, you could easily make this into a pro-touring Cord kit car. Talk about standing out from the crowd, and street sleeper. How many Cord owners can say they bested a musclecar in a drag race? How many musclecar owners would admit it?
