Before a concept car or production model ever rolls down the assembly line, there are literally years of design work to do beforehand. Among the most intensive jobs for car designers are building foam-and-clay models for wind tunnel and consumer testing. It’s a lot easier building a car out of clay than metal and fabric, and a lot cheaper to make changes too. But most people never see these clay models.
So how did Mustang6G.com get its mitts on these clay models purporting to show the next-gen 2015 Ford Mustang? That’s the question that has much of the Internet scratching its collective head today.
These pictures show a car that is very clearly a coupe, and the backend especially seems to suggest some old-school Mustang influences. But the front end has definitely been based around the popular Ford Evos concept, lending credence to rumors that the Evos heralds the look for the next-gen Mustang.
But Jalopnik says that, after reaching out to Ford, they were told these pictures are old and have nothing to do with the new Mustang. Instead these pictures came from an unspecified blogger event. However, this writer has been on these blogger events, and Ford made it very clear that no pictures were allowed, even for already-debuted models. And what else could this design be for? How did these pictures get out? Why did this writer see this clay model, despite having been on two separate Ford-sponsored blogger events?
Time will tell…but we’re gonna go out on a limb and say that there might be a lot more to these leaked photos than Ford is letting on.
