Ever wonder what happens to those cars we see in marketing campaigns for new vehicles? Many times those cars never even exist, but are rather computer-generated images that are so lifelike most of us can’t tell the difference. You can’t CGI your way through everything, and the images used to sell the recent BOSS 302 Mustang Laguna Seca Edition were in fact very real.

Up for grabs on eBay is this 2012 Mustang BOSS 302 Laguna Seca serial number MP001, and the seller claims this is the same car used in many marketing and promotional events, including being reviewed by many print magazines.

Does that make this already-special Mustang even more special? According to the seller, Gene Butman Ford, it does indeed. This is purportedly the very first production BOSS 302 Laguna Seca Edition ever built, with the MP in MP001 standing for “Mass Production.” Indeed, most, if not all of Ford’s promotional materials featured a Mustang that looked very similar to this one.

Butman Ford even reportedly has documentation from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant manager that this was the first 2013 BOSS 302 Laguna Seca built. That is not to be confused with the first new-generation BOSS 302 Mustang, which an unknowing buyer purchased from a Texas Ford dealership in 2011. While that car was worth a pretty penny, is a marketing tool worth much more than its face value?

That all depends on if you’re the kind of collector who would want to point to the official Ford calender and say “Ya, that’s my car, right there.” It all depends on what you’re willing to pay as well. The original sticker price for this car shows $49,900, the current bid on eBay as of this article going live is right at $70,000, and the reserve has still not been met. Someday this car might be worth six figures, but that’s a number that is purely left up to the seller and buyer to determine.
