For years, BMW was a small niche automaker with sporty roots but lacking the mainstream popularity needed to make it big. That all changed with the immensely-popular E30 3-Series BMWs, which helped set a legacy of excellent sports sedans bearing the BMW logo. Today many E30 BMWs have found a second life as race cars, show cars, and curious projects.
Up on eBay right now is a 1987 BMW 325e that has had its old inline-six cylinder engine replaced by a modern Ford 5.0 V8. While this project can use a few finishing touches, the hard work is all done, and the asking price is just right.
While you may be thinking that this 5.0 engine came from a Fox-body Mustang, it is actually a later variant pulled from a Mercury Mountaineer SUV. These later pushrod 5.0’s had a few advantages, including better cylinder heads and ignition systems. Thanks to a few modifications, the seller estimates horsepower to be between 260 and 280 at the wheels.
That’s more power than this Bimmer originally packed, and the lightweight nature of these classic sedans means the V8 will help it scoot right along. That said, you’ll need to finish adding the trim pieces and reassembling this car before it is all finished and ready for the road. But with a Buy It Now price of just $4,500, you wouldn’t have to invest much more than a few hours of work and a few bucks in parts to have one unique ride to show off at the car show.
Sure, it’s no classic Ford muscle car…but it’ll still give most Mustangs a run for their money.
