We may not like the police when we get pulled over for speeding, but law enforcement officers have the thankless job of keeping us safe, sometimes even from ourselves. Most people act in a different way around the police, conscious of their actions. That is why some departments deploy undercover, unmarked cars catch people unawares.
One wouldn’t think a Ford Mustang would be a good undercover cop car, but for decades now departments across the country have used the pony car to catch perps breaking all kinds of highway laws. El Paso Inc. reports that the Texas city recently bought 13 2012 Ford Mustang GT’s for use as highway enforcement, and some of the stories are real knee-slappers.
For example, one kid tried to get out of the ticket by saying that since he beat Officer Sergio Cordova in a race, he should get off the hook. Another driver flew past the Grabber Blue Mustang at almost 100 mph, and when he got pulled over, the driver slammed his fists on the dashboard. At a cost of $41,000 each, the Mustangs prove invaluable in catching law breakers at their worst.
It’s one of the few jobs where workers get to actively drive Mustangs at high speeds on public roads. Of course you also have to deal with the dregs of society and the criminal class…but it’d be a lot easier to deal with if your office was a brand new Mustang GT. While El Paso is just the latest city to add Mustangs to its fleet, the pony patrol cars are put to good use all over America.
While Ford is pushing the Taurus as a replacement for the Crown Vic, the Mustang is such a sneaky cop car that it is perfect for undercover work. And who is going to try and outrun a 400+ horsepower cop car?
