During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, America’s police forces found themselves driving much slower cars than many of the criminals they were chasing. Ford stepped in to offer the Boys In Blue the Mustang Special Service Package, which was basically a stripped down, high performance Mustang for pursuit work.
While Mustangs still find work as police cars across the country, Ford now offers Police Interceptor models of both its Taurus and Explorer models, and they’re adding a third vehicle to the lineup. Enter the Ford F-150 Special Service Vehicle, a police truck that will have bad guys trembling.
The F-150 SSV will be available in almost any configuration for an F-150, and can be had with either the 5.0 liter V8 or 3.5 liter EcoBoost engines. A high-capacity amp has been included to allow the addition of many electronic devices like radios and light bars, and the package comes at no extra cost to commercial or government fleet buyers.
What that means is expect to see even more F-150 pickups entering police and fire duty. Ford seems intent on maintaining strong fleet sales, and the F-150 SSV should help them keep the market on lockdown. Still, we find ourselves wishing for the return of an SSP Mustang. So what is the holdup Ford?
