One of the big reasons Baby Boomers were drawn to the Ford Mustang was the wide variety of options, engines, and colors it was available in. From more traditional hues like red, silver, and gold to bright and bold colors that included favorites like Grabber Blue and Gotta Have It Green, the Mustang has worn many tones, and all of them well. But which colors were the most popular?
Ford has revealed that the most popular Mustang color over the past 50 years has been none other than red. Nearly 21% of all Mustangs ever sold are one shade of red or another, bucking national trends that have seen white and silver dominate the popularity charts. There are some other color stats that might surprise you too.
Close on the heels of popularity to red are shades of blue, which have accounted for around 17% of all Mustang sales. In 1968, a whopping 30% of Mustangs were painted blue, and between 1967 and 1973 Ford offered no fewer than 19 shades of blue. As of late blue has become popular again, while once-popular shades like green, yellow, and brown are mostly relegated to special edition Mustangs. That said, there’s even been a few pink Mustangs along the way.
Meanwhile silver, white, and black make up 14%, 13%, and 12% of all Mustang sales respectively, though black currently dominates the sales charts. 28% of 2013 Mustangs were painted black, and while other colors like yellow make up just 6% of total Mustang sales, yellow Mustangs have a ravenous fan-base that celebrates their uncommonly-colored cars.
So does your Mustang follow the traditional trends or is it a horse of a different color?
