When it first hit the streets, Ford’s Fox-body Mustang was a total departure from both the original first-generation Mustang, and the Mustang II it replaced. It was quite the stylish car back in its day, though these days styling has become a lot more fluid and aerodynamic than the boxy body of the 1979-93 Mustang. But that hasn’t stopped some enterprising Mustang fans from making their own mods based on today’s trend.
Over on the Corral forums, user Kevins89Notch5.0 posted a picture of a Fox-body Mustang with hood modification inspired by, of all things, the Corvette ZR1. To each their own…but still, yuck.
Now we’re all for homemade, DIY mods, and there is nothing wrong with trying to add a little flair or style to your Fox-body. But some trends aren’t really made for copycatting, and the Corvette ZR1’s see-through hood is something that undoubtedly cost millions of dollars to develop and test. Cutting a hole in your hood is a pretty bold move, so it better look good.
On the left is a clear hood done right; on the right is an aerodynamic abomination.
And this DIY hackjob is anything but. We’re not sure what the designer was going for, but the hood is cut in an awkward way, exposing the intake manifold and cold air intake piping as well. Over that is a piece of plastic or plexiglass set up sort of like a cowl induction hood, only it is held down by what appears to be packing tape. About the only legitimate excuse we can think of is that this Mustang has a 351W swap, which has a taller deck, and thus hood clearance was an issue.
But no matter what way you “cut” it, the hole in this Mustang’s hood is a DIY disaster. If you have enough money for a shiny new intake, but not a hood, maybe you need to shift priorities.
