The Ford GT40 is one of the most famous race cars in existence, defying the odds and defeating the nigh-unbeatable Ferrari team at the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans, among other races. To celebrate its iconic 1964 victory the Blue Oval built the Ford GT for the 2005 and 2006 model years. This was the ultimate Ford supercar, costing $150,000 out the door, almost $100,000 more than the 2013 Shelby GT500.
While Ford is rumored to be working on a Ford GT successor, Galpin Auto Sports (or GAS) is building its own version of the GT called the GTR-1. GAS promises over 1,000 horsepower, a lightweight and low chassis, and plenty of customization options.
Details are limited right now, and we have only a few sketches of what to expect. The design is nothing radical, and follows the lines of the Ford GT fairly closely. GAS says that the uncreatively-named GTR-1 will have a skin made from either carbon fiber or aluminum. This body will be fitted over a standard Ford GT chassis, though the 550 horsepower engine will need some major modifications to break the 1,000 horsepower barrier.
Not that it isn’t possible; there are plenty of Ford GTs out there running well over 1,000 horsepower. With the new GAS-built body, as well as suspension and interior modifications, this could be one cool car, a representation of what the Ford GT would be if the Blue Oval kept building it. But with rumors of a new Ford GT in the works, could Ford steal GAS’s thunder?
