Rally racing has never reached the level of popularity in America that it enjoys in Europe, but there are still plenty of big-name racers competing in professional rallies in the USA. Among them is international superstar Ken Block, who is well known for his viral Gymkhana videos and Hoonigan antics. Yet despite competing in pro rally racing for years, Block has had only a few small successes in his rallying career.
One of the few shining spots on his rally resume however is the 100 Acre Wood Rally in Southern Missouri, which Block won the past six consecutive years. He was hoping to win the rally a seventh year in a row, but alas, it was not meant to be, as mechanical issues effectively sidelined the Hoonigan racing champ as reported on the Hoonigan Racing blog.
Instead, victory went to David Higgins and Craig Drew of the Subaru Rally Team. Despite a severe physiological advantage, having dominated the 100 Acre Rally for the past half-decade, Block’s Hybrid Function Hooning Vehicle couldn’t keep it together for the race. During the night time stage 6, Block suffered a harsh crash that saw him miss the next three stages of the rally.
Up until that point, Block had been leading the race. The Hoonigan returned for stage 10, but a throttle problem with a 50-cent part would sideline the H.F.H.V. once again, and this time for good, leaving the door wide open for a Subaru upset. Another Ford favorite, Dillon Van Way, also recieved a DNF when his custom 2WD Ford Focus failed to complete the race as well.
All in all, it was a rough weekend for Ford’s rally racing efforts, but there’s always that next race to look forward to.
