American muscle cars have come a long way in terms of safety and actual drivability compared with the originals. Hell, today’s Ford Mustang has more computing power than the original Apollo missions to the moon, and a lot of that computing power goes towards safety. Yet no technology developed yet can save a Mustang from a sleepy driver…though all those passive safety features like crumple zones can save lives.
What caused this head-on accident between a Mustang and dump truck, we may never know. But the Lake County News reports that the driver and passenger of this mangled Mustang somehow survived, though the driver needed the Jaws of Life to escape the wreckage.
According to official reports, as well as a witness, Terrance Reeves of Eureka, California was traveling with his girlfriend down Rt. 20 when he drifted into the other lane. Fatigue may have been a factor, as Reeve’s girlfriend said that the 30-year old took a caffeine pill and energy drink before driving. For whatever reason, Reeves found himself heading straight for a dump truck.
Suffice to say, the collision between Mustang and dump truck happened in a most spectacular fashion, forcing both vehicles off of the road. Reeves became pinned in the wreckage of his Mustang, suffering serious injury to his lower body. But his girlfriend survived with just minor injuries, as did the truck driver, and Reeve’s likely owes his life to the Mustang’s safety features.
