Most of us will never know what it takes to keep a car racing at full throttle for 24 straight hours. Mental, physical, and mechanical exhaustion are constant enemies, and endurance racing requires an entire team to keep their race car on the track. But sometimes the dice just don’t roll your way, and victory is snatched from your hands.

Facing a major mechanical failure during the last lap of a 24 Hour race would be the point where most people quit. But not Jose Close, the driver of an endurance racing Mustang that suffered mechanical issues all race. Mustangs Daily reports that despite his car quitting on him after finally getting back on track, Jose was so determined to finish that he literally pushed his car over the finish line.

That friends, is dedication.

There was a video that went with this story, though it has since been yanked from YouTube. However we still have one still image, and enough hearsay to piece together what happened. Jose’s Mustang suffered an engine problem with several hours left in the Spa 24 Hour Circuit Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The crew worked long and hard to get the Mustang back on track for the final lap, and it made it almost the whole way around before dying again.

Instead of leaving the Mustang where it was though, Jose got out and physically pushed his car the last few yards over the finish line, netting him and his team 7th place overall. That’s way better than a DNF, and we have to admire the spirit of this determined driver.
