The outgoing 2014 GT500 has to be one of the best performance bargains of all time. With over 660 hp at the command of the driver’s right foot, this car is easily capable of beating up on a variety of cars that cost well over the Shelby’s price tag of over $60k.
While the mighty Corvette is often referred to as “America’s Sports Car”, the GT500 can often best it in the straight line, which is typically where most contests of speed -legal or otherwise, take place. Even the C6 in Z06 trim proves no match for the Shelby in this video. The race takes place at Bandimere speedway, in Morrison, CO, and we assume this was on a recent Test ’n Tune night, but the video description doesn’t give us any more than that.
Despite the Corvette getting a jump on the starting line with a 0.345 reaction time to the GT500 driver’s .401, the GT500 easily overpowers the Vette as things progress down the track. The margin isn’t just a few hundredths either, it’s nearly a full second with the GT500 turning in a 12.75 et at 118.22, to the Z06’s 13.74 at 110.05.
The ET’s would seem to reflect two stock cars squaring off, as we’ve seen several well driven GT500’s dip well into the mid 12’s. It’s another notch in the blower belt for this GT500, and as we wonder what the future holds for SVT and Shelby, it’s a glimmer of hope that the top of the line Mustang will continue to be the top dog at the drag strip.
