While Italy maybe a country best known for its exotic cars, America has proven time and again that when it comes to affordable performance, nothing beats a good old fashioned muscle car. The Ford Mustang has long been a popular platform for chasing outlandish speeds in a streetable vehicle, and Shelby American has never disappointed us when it comes to delivering a truly “super” supercar.
The 2013 Shelby Super Snake arrived on the scene with a supercharged engine and an estimated 850 horsepower, and now according to Shelby American, independent tests have revealed that the Super Snake can run the quarter-mile in the 10 second range. Ya, that definitely qualifies as “super.”
Based on the 662 horsepower 2013 Shelby GT500, the Shelby Super Snake gets a significant power buff to 850 ponies, along with a host of suspension, drivetrain, and body upgrades. Shelby put a veteran test driver into the Super Snake and took it to Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida for some quarter-mile testing. The results, according to the test drivers, are downright impressive.
While Shelby didn’t get specific, they did say that the Super Snake was hitting mid-10 second runs at around 135 mph. The unnamed driver said that, had the Super Snake had a more track-oriented setup, a 9-second run would not have been out of the question. Oh, and this was on pump gas with street-legal drag radials. Take note Italy, America’s supercars are kicking some serious ass.
