While we have the pleasure of focusing and writing solely on the cars we know and love, other journalists have to try and cover boring the boring and benign with a similar level of enthusiasm. So much respect goes out to publications like Wards Auto, which covers every aspect of the auto industry…even the boring, unexciting stuff.
But with this tough job comes a lot of credibility, and when the end of the year rolls around the fellows at Wards Auto have a chance to put together a list that many automakers long to be on; the 10 Best Engines of the Year award. This year the competition was tougher than ever, but Ford Motor Company still managed to land not one, but two of the coveted spots on Wards 10 Best Engines of 2013 list.
The most obvious choice for best engines from Ford has to go to the supercharged 5.9 liter engine found in the 2013 Shelby GT500. Producing a mind-blowing 662 horsepower and 630- ft-lbs of torque, it is the most powerful engine in any mass-production car on the planet…and you can own one for about $55,000. Yup, Ford nailed that one.
The other engine might not be so obvious at first, but it makes sense once you think about it. The 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine found in the Ford Focus ST and Ford Taurus was also named to the 10 Best list thanks to its excellent performance and output in such a small package. While both GM and its 2.0 liter turbo, and Chrysler’s new Pentastar V6 engine were also recognized by Wards, Ford was the only domestic automaker with two distinctly performance engines on the list.
And the Blue Oval upswing continues.
