Forget what you thought you knew about air bag suspension systems, they are not just for low-riders anymore. What you used to see mostly on slammed trucks and the like can now help improve the overall ride and handling of your Ford Mustang. A Mustang with air suspension can perform well on the track, draw tons of attention at show-n-shines.
The video above put together by Bill from CJ Pony Parts with the help of Jeremy at Air Lift Performance shows it’s done and all the benefits to be had from the installation of the new Air Lift Performance air suspension system for 2005 to 2014 Ford Mustangs.
This particular installation was performed on a 2013 Ford Mustang GT500, but it’s representative of the installation process on any of the applicable model-year Mustangs.
The new kit includes front struts, rear air bags, rear shocks, air control block, air compressor, storage tank, and the Air Lift Performance V2 controller. The V2 controller is compact and has eight different presets for ride heights. The range that the system can create is amazing; its normal ride height is about 1.5 to 2 inches below stock, or it can go 4 inches down, or it can go about 0.5 to 1 inch above stock.
One of the most significant aspects of the system is that the front struts and rear bags are adjustable, from very stiff to soft, so it can be used to set up and change weight distribution and the balance of the car. And the camber plates in the kit will go to negative 3 degrees if you want. This is a complete bolt-in kit, and the average mechanic should be able to do it in about 8 to 10 hours, with no special tools, and only a few holes drilled.
For those who are concerned with extra weight, the storage tank (normally mounted under or in the trunk) it is aluminum and lightweight, and in this case the stock front struts on the car weighed 8 pounds more than the Air Lift replacement front struts, so there are no real worries about gaining a lot of weight with this kit.
A really nice thing about the controller unit is that it is a two-push button activated setup, so if you accidentally bump it going down the highway it won’t activate and change the stance of your car while you are driving. Air Lift Performance is currently working on a 2015 Mustang kit like this, too, and we hear that CJ Pony Parts plans an installation video of that as well, so stay tuned to StangTV!
