Video: Ford Performance Fine-Tunes The Focus RS RX

Earlier this month, Ford Performance released a set of videos giving Focus RS RX fans a first-hand look at the Micro-Adjustments that were made before the start of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Season based on data that was collected after the car’s debut year.

In the first set of YouTube videos, the team focused on fine-tuning the vehicle’s engine and suspension upon launch, ensuring the Focus RS RX was the quickest off the line and into the first corner.

In this second set of videos, the team set their sights on arguably the most important aspect of any race car; the driver. The team at Ford Performance, along with help from M-Sport, and Hoonigan Racing Division worked closely together to listen to the feedback and suggestions the drivers had for the rally car.

So what kind of suggestions do professional FIA World Rallycross drivers Andreas Bakkerud and Ken Block give to the Focus RS RX engineers?

Ford Focus RS RX Specs

Acceleration: Capable of 0-60 mph/under 2 seconds.

Body: 2016 Ford Focus RS, seam welded and reinforced. M-Sport designed, homologated FIA-spec roll cage. Custom body design by Ford Performance and M-Sport, UK. Bespoke underbody protection.

Engine: M-Sport/Ford Performance designed 2000cc four-cylinder, Garrett turbocharged.

Output: 600 horsepower / 650 lb-ft of torque

Transmission: Sadev six-speed Sequential along with Sadev rear diff and center diff release unit.

It all comes down to the those small adjustments for both the driver and the vehicle. And in FIA World Rallycross races, minor adjustments can produce podium results.

So just what kind of changes do you make to an already impressive rallycross platform?

“It’s not only the engine, or the differential or the damper itself…it’s the whole combination,” driver Andreas Bakkerud said. “With the knowledge we learned last year, we are putting it together in one box and locking it up and go!”

The Focus RS RX team is hoping that the lessons learned during year one along with this season’s adjustments will give the team the competitive edge it takes to win championships.

Round six of the FIA World Rallycross season runs June 9-11 in Norway. For more information, check out the official website here.
