Ford’s new line of EcoBoost engines have proven quite popular with the truck-buying crowd, with many a F-150 now equipped with the 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6 engine. With 365 horsepower and a torque curve as flat as Kansas, this EcoBoost V6 provides a whole lot of forward motivation, even to the heavy full-size F-150 pickups.
But is it powerful enough to beat a Mustang Cobra in a head-to-head drag race? This next video answers that question with a resounding yes, though some of the Mustang faithful may cry foul.
That’s because the Mustang in question is from the SN95 body style, before the supercharged “Terminator” Cobras of 2003-04. Add to that the fact that it is a droptop Mustang, which is heavier than a coupe, and you have a pony car with a distinct disadvantage. That’s not to say the F-150 is some lightweight though, packing on almost an extra ton of weight over the Mustang. If you ask us, this is a fairly even match.
And these two back-to-back drag races prove it, with the EcoBoost F-150 eeking out a narrow victory in the first race, running an impressive 14.23 at 96 mph in the quarter-mile. But round two goes to the Cobra with a 14.31 at 100 mph. Even we must admit, the fact that a Ford pickup so easily keeps up with a soon-to-be-classic Mustang is impressive.
