The Focus ST is one of the hottest new products to come out of Ford in quite some time. While we know that cars like the GT500, BOSS 302, and Mustang GT lead the way for performance, it’s the Focus ST that will likely reel in a whole new group of buyers and turn them Ford Faithful.
While the majority of these hot hatches may stay fairly stock, or receive only minor performance bolt-on parts, there will be several that also go to the other extreme. Pushing the limits of the stock drivetrain, and finding that bleeding edge of performance is what many tuners due so well, and we’re hearing rumors of Focus STs that are making over 400 horsepower.
Whether you’re building a front wheel drive monster such as a 400-plus horsepower ST, or you’re just looking for better performance from your current car, SPEC has recently released their latest clutch products for Ford’s hot hatch.
SPEC has developed and made available no fewer than seven different single disc stage clutches for various combinations of horsepower handling and drivability manners. For street driven applications, clutches are available rated up to 580 ft-lbs of torque. While racing units are available all the way up to 820 ft-lbs. In either case a clutch at that end of the spectrum should offer extreme levels of performance.

SPEC clutch offerings for the Focus ST range from stock style replacements to fully race oriented units capable of handling over 800 ft-lbs of torque.
On the flywheel side, SPEC is offering their billet flywheels for stock style replacement clutches (street) and their non-ratcheting style for racing applications. The billet flywheel tips the scales at just 9.5 pounds.
We have yet to see in person a Focus ST that could utilize such a setup, as these would likely be relegated to track duty only. However for street goers, a billet flywheel would mean higher RPM capability, and lower rotating mass on the engine, allowing for faster acceleration.
No performance data has been released on the advantages of swapping one of these in a Focus ST, but we’ll be keeping a watch for such an upgrade in the coming months, and wouldn’t expect anything short of impressive from SPEC. For more information check out the SPEC web site, or give them call.
