Video: VMP Details The Importance of Cooling On Supercharged Engines

One of the major enemies of horsepower is heat. This is especially true with forced induction engines where just the act of compressing the air generates heat to some degree. To help counteract this issue intercoolers and heat exchangers are often employed, however putting those parts together with others in an effective package is the key to minimizing heat.

VMP Tuning is known for their work with late model Mustang supercharging. They’ve developed a number of supercharger systems based around the Eaton TVS supercharger, which alone is highly efficient and generates massive amounts of power on late model Mustangs. VMP also conducts a vast amount of research and development for each system to ensure not only a good fit, and high power, but also efficient operation.

Included in their supercharger system for Coyote 5.0 Mustangs is VMP’s dual fan heat exchanger, which mounts behind the grille allowing it to pull in plenty of fresh, cool air from outside the car. This heat exchanger is key to the system making consistent power whether the car is on the street, at the drag strip.

Using their in-house Dnyojet dyno, VMP determined that on a 10-second quarter-mile pass the temperature of the intake air charge can rise by as much as 30 degrees. The computer will pull out three degrees of timing when the intake temperature passes 15 degrees0, which robs the car of around 30 horsepower. Pulling that timing is necessary to prevent a lean condition as the hotter air is less dense than cooler air.

With the VMP system, including their heat exchanger, temperatures only rise by 10 degrees on that 10 second run. This allows the engine to make more power, and hopefully get the car down the track a little faster by keeping the air charge temperature as cool as possible.

VMP also offers several other unique features to their 5.0 kit that help keep air charge temperatures cool, including high flow cold air induction,and a high flow inlet elbow that the blower is CNC port-matched to. Customers can also select the pulley size for the power output they’re looking for. With the 79mm pulley, through stock catalytic converters the BOSS 302 used in the video made 620 hp and 529 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels.
