High-Tech Transfer Case Enables 2017 Raptor Terrain Management

To walk the line of street pickup and off-road terror, the 2017 Raptor features an all-new dual-mode transfer case, which makes use of all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems plus electronic lockers. This system allows the truck to seamlessly shift between many of the six modes available in its Terrain Management System.

“Raptor’s transfer case provides the best of both worlds, with the natural benefits from all-wheel drive, such as increased traction in rain and snow, as well as extreme off-road capability that comes with a mechanically locked system,” Tony Greco, Ford F-150 Raptor program manager, said.

The Raptor’s wide array of terrain modes includes Normal, Sport, Weather, Mud/Sand, Baja and Rock Crawl. We were fortunate enough to sample the efficacy of all these modes during the Raptor Assault program at the Ford Performance Racing School. The modes work quite well, applying just the right mix of 4×4 high or low with other changes to maximize traction for the given situation.

“The torque-on-demand transfer case and six-mode Terrain Management System is unique to Raptor in the Ford family of vehicles,” Matt Tranter, Ford Performance engineering supervisor, said. “It gives you the benefit of a clutched all-wheel-drive system for easy around-town maneuverability in bad weather. Then, there’s Baja Mode, which automatically engages a mechanically locked 4×4 high, and optimizes throttle response, shifting and boost control to provide improved off-road capability. That’s definitely drawing a line in the sand.”

The transfer case and drive modes paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission, definitely make the most of the 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque it has to offer.
