You may remember the article we wrote back in April on Justin Cyrnek’s incredible silver 2013 Mustang, which was built by Evolution Performance over the span of six days and managed to crank off an incredible 8.74 elapsed time at over 155 MPH. Well, the Evolution team is back at it again, on a 2013 Gotta Have it Green machine, also owned by Cyrnek (owner of Chicago Industrial Equipment) that’s been dubbed the “Green Goblin”.

The Green Goblin had been previously modified by Evolution, but was returned to the team with the express intention of making it into the quickest and fastest 2013 on the planet. Evo’s Fred Cook is proud to announce that he and his team, headed by Evolution owner Nelson Whitlock and lead technician Chuck Wrzesniewski, took the Goblin to the NMRA race at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio last weekend and took home the title of quickest 5.0 in the 5.0 Shootout.

evo3How did they achieve the feat, you ask? The GHIG car has been completely revamped, this time around sporting a completely-built L&M Race Engines-built 302-cube Coyote engine with a set of Slawko Racing Heads‘ CNC cylinder heads and intake manifold. A 4.0L Whipple twin-screw supercharger rests on top, sucking air through one of JLT‘s Super Big Air 155mm cold air intake kits and a Ford Racing oval throttle body. The exhaust side is headed up by a set of American Racing Headers‘ two-inch longtubes, and an ATI Racing 20-percent-overdrive damper helps to cram the boost into the record-setting engine.

“We’ve got bigger camshafts in this engine compared to the other one – we needed them to be able to keep up with the bigger supercharger. Slawko also did a ton of work on the cylinder heads and manifold in order to make sure the airflow we needed to run this quickly was there,” says Cook. With the pulley combination set up to deliver 23-pounds of boost, the car spun Evolution’s dyno roller to a number well north of 1100 hp at the rear wheels.

As the architect of the project, Cook had lots of preparation work to do leading up to the day where the car was dropped off to the shop. “I knew the direction I wanted to go with the car and I set some pretty high goals, some of which still have to be achieved. I put the whole combination together on paper months before the car arrived. Engine, supercharger, transmission, rear end, gears, headers, suspension, chassis, fuel system, brakes, hood, wheels, tires, paint scheme, everything. I took some major risks with using some components, and there were a ton of “first time doing things” with getting some of the parts to work together. Chuck, our lead tech, is extremely intelligent and came up with ways to make it all possible. Brian Deal did all the paint work on the hood, spoiler and engine bay. He does all of our paint work and is an amazing talent,” Cook explains.

evo4The fuel supply area is handled by a Weldon Racing pump and pair of filters and is sprayed through Fuel Injector Clinic‘s whopping 205 lb./hr. fuel injectors, while Fore Innovations‘ regulator keeps the pressure in check. JRS Fabrication built the 10-point rollcage in the car, and a complete Evolution Performance suspension system is under the car including adjustable upper and lower control arms, adjustable panhard bar, and an Evolution-built fabricated 9-inch rearend housing. Transmission duties are handled by a transbraked Turbo400 transmission and custom converter, riding on Evolution’s billet crossmember.

One of the insane things about this car is that it still weighs in at over 3,300 pounds with driver, has two race seats and a rear-seat delete in the otherwise-full interior. It’s been tuned by none other than Jon Lund of Lund Racing – using SCT‘s software and X3 hand-held flash tuner. “We’ve got a stock engine computer and SCT on board, and we’ve been working with Jon for years on tuning for our customers. His work is second-to-none, and it’s just amazing what these cars are capable of with the SCT software,” Cook says. The car runs, as many of the Evolution Performance machines do, on Sunoco Race Fuels E-85R. The car was tested on a couple of runs prior to the NMRA event at Cecil County Dragway, and then put into the box to head out to Norwalk.

The Green Goblin now holds the record as the quickest production 2011-14 Mustang, having turned in an 8.46 at 163 MPH over the course of the weekend, achieved with a super-quick 1.26 short time. The team did do some experimentation with a 50-shot of NX dry-system nitrous oxide during the last three passes of the weekend, using it only between 5,200 and 7,500 RPM. The car competed in an all-Evolution final round of the 5.0 Shootout driven by Whitlock against customer Chris Cruz and took home the win (with an 8.51) and the record (the aforementioned 8.46) all in one weekend. Cyrnek will have the car on the property at the next NMRA event in Joliet, IL, just outside his hometown of Chicago, over the second weekend of July.

“Justin Cyrnek is one of the best customers we have ever worked with; he’s trusted us with building three cars for him and has given me full control of all three combinations since our record speaks for itself. We pay a lot of attention to the details, and it shows,” says Cook.

Cook raves about this car, and is proud to have had the opportunity for Evolution to build it. “The car looks too good and the install is too clean to be a race car. Without a doubt it was the cleanest and nicest car on the Norwalk property bar none,” he says.

This unbelievable car approaches, and in many cases, eclipses Cobra Jet performance – and is completely street-drivable. How’s that for amazing?
