The Coyote engine’s debut in the 2011 Mustang GT was the biggest since the ’03-’04 Cobra’s supercharged Four-Valve engine. It sent a wave through the Mustang industry just like the Cobra, as well. However, the Coyote GT’s seem to love going fast, with seemingly minimal mods.
This is going to sound simplistic, and minimize the work that has been done to the car, but Fluid Turbo Concepts’ latest test vehicle, owned by Joey Basile, has one of the company’s F3 twin turbo systems, a Mustang Performance Racing-built long block, a Power by the Hour-built 6R80 automatic and 8.8 rear end, and a Fore Innovations fuel system with Injector Dynamics ID1300 fuel injectors.
With those mods, Joey ran a 9.26 at 155 mph this past Friday night at Palm Beach International Raceway. The car is 100-percent street car with a full interior, full exhaust. It ran that time on 20-inch wheels with Mickey Thompson P305/35R20 ET Street Radial IIs out back. The car’s 60-ft time was a 1.64, but Lund Racing’s Ken Bjonnes, the tuner on the car, says the converter is too tight. Therefore, Circle D is working on a new converter for the car, which should greatly benefit that 60-ft time, which in turn should help overall elapsed time.
Bjonnes says he has cut a 1.49 60-ft time with this same tire set-up, and thinks he can even improve on that number with this car. The car made right at 1,000-rwhp in this configuration, but with 23 pounds of boost, the car made 1,140-rwhp. Bjonnes hopes to have the converter in the car soon, and get back to the track. He’s looking to run 8s, no problem.
