The big reveal of an all-new Ford GT surprised and pleased Blue Oval fans from around the world, as well as earning begrudging nods of respect from competitors. Packed with a 600 horsepower 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6 engine, with a body made mostly out of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials, and looking every bit like the supercar it is, it’s a car unlike anything else in the Ford lineup.
One could be forgiven for mistaking the new Ford GT for something from a more “storied” or “exotic” brand from the other side of the Atlantic. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy watching some dignified Londoners mistake the GT for a Zonda, Lamborghini, and even an electric car. We’re not kidding.
Obvious (and massive) exhaust ports aside, the Ford GT does bear the slightest resemblance to the Croatian-built, million-dollar Rimac Concept_One electric supercar…in a way all supercars kinda look the same. Some of the better guesses were along the lines of Ferrari, Zonda, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and McLaren, brands best known for building limited numbers of high-performance vehicles…which is exactly what the Ford GT is. From every angle, this is a verifiable supercar, and we have little doubt it’ll be able to keep pace with Europe’s best.
Despite the Blue Oval badge, rumor has it that the Ford GT will come with a $600,000 price tag, which puts it right in the ballpark with many of those other brands. That’s a huge jump from the $150,000 the 2004-5 Ford GT cost, even when taking dealer markups and inflation into account. Ford has been moving its brand image upscale in recent years, and the Ford GT is the culmination of a decade-long remake of one of America’s oldest automakers.
