Being an engineer for a major car maker has got to be a pretty cool job. But being an engineer at Ford has got to be among the best jobs for engineers, who get to work on a wide range of high-performance cars like the Mustang, and engines like the EcoBoost. But these engineers don’t always get to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Can you imagine a brake designer ripping around the track in a Taurus SHO?
Neither can we. That’s why Ford enlisted NASCAR driver Carl Edwards to take a team of Taurus engineers around the track in the SHO, where they try to talk about the excellent engineering while not defecating their pants.
The series of videos, called “Rocket Science,” has Edwards driving around the track in the 3.5 liter EcoBoost-powered 2013 Taurus SHO. The 2013 Taurus also has a 3.7 liter V6 and 2.0 liter EcoBoost engines at its disposal, though none come close to the power of the SHO. And so while Edwards rips around the track, the engineering team talks about fuel economy, braking, and of course horsepower.
There are four of these videos out right now; we posted the first one, though the rest can be watched here. Of the nine engineers Edwards takes for a ride, some enjoy it more than others, though in the end they are all wearing huge smiles. It’s a clever marketing gimmick to be sure, combining the geeks (engineers) with the jock (Edwards) with a car that appeals to both. Kind of makes us want to take a Taurus SHO for a spin…
