If you’ve played any racing games lately, you know that most of them follow the same tried-and-true formula. It’s been awhile since we saw a fresh take on gaming, especially in the online era, but Ubisoft’s “The Crew” offers a tantalizing alternative to the checkpoint-heavy racing games of the past and present era.
The latest trailer for The Crew showcases not just the exotic locations and multiplayer action at the center of this virtual universe, but the many upgrades you can make to real cars, like the Ford Mustang, transforming them into totally different vehicles. Yes, that’s a Mustang baja buggy you see there.
The Crew is part massively multiplayer online game, part heist game, and part car customization game. You can outfit your vehicle with a variety of different parts from different “specs”, such as off-road, street racing, and circuit specs. Each part affects a car in a different way, and you earn money pulling road heists to earn more parts.
The game lets you get mighty creative with your rides, as we watch the Mustang at the center of the trailer drive from Detroit to Miami, taking on several different forms along the way. With a massive map, seemingly endless customization options, and thousands of people to play with at any one time, The Crew seems to be the action racing game we’ve all been waiting for.
No official release date has been set, though The Crew should hit store shelves this fall.
