College marketing classes still use the 1964 Ford Mustang as an example of excellent marketing strategies, even though the way people sell products has changed drastically. Back in 1964, Ford pursued traditional marketing outlets like magazine and television advertisements, but it also did never-before-attempted schemes, like putting a Mustang convertible on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in 1965. Back then, that’s how you got attention!
These days, marketing efforts are a little…well, weirder, quite frankly, though these odd ads can resonate just as well. Take for example this 1980s-style aerobics/dance-off video starring aerobic dancers, and a pair of 2015 Mustangs. This is a Mustang ad, right?
To be honest, we weren’t really sure until the last few seconds of the video, when the 2015 Mustang returned with its roaring engine and fierce new style. Meanwhile, about 90 seconds of the two-minute video are devoted entirely to this 80s dance tribute that is (hopefully) mis-choreographed to give it that amateur, just-sorta-happened feel.
What any of this has to do with the 2015 Mustang, we dunno. The 1980s weren’t exactly the high-water mark for Mustang performance, and as far as we know, track suits aren’t making a comeback either. Yet the internet can’t seem to get enough of this weird music video, with over 160,000 views in less than a week. Not exactly lighting the world on fire, but some people love this video, others thinks its a little too “out there” for their tastes.
What say you? An entertaining ode to the 80s, or just more Internet drivel?
