Ever since the 1993 Cobra hit the streets, enthusiasts have clamored for some of the body parts that make it a unique appearing Mustang. One of the most popular of those parts has been the running horse grille insert, which set the front end of the Cobra apart from all other Fox-body Mustangs.
The problem with the grille insert is that for many enthusiasts this appears to be a complicated installation, and while it’s more than just your typical nuts and bolts affair, LateModelRestoration.com shows us in this video, it’s not that bad to pull off.
The grille insert which is part number LRS-8200F does require painting, meaning that anyone looking to install it will need to either paint it themselves, or have a professional do it for them. The insert is made from original Ford tooling, ensuring a high quality part that fits. After painting, if you have access to a cutting tool that will allow you to easily cut the plastic bumper, as well as a few sockets to take the bumper off, most enthusiasts can handle this installation themselves.
As shown in the video, with the bumper removed, a supplied template is used to trace an outline on the front of the bumper. From there the bumper can be carefully cut to allow the insert to be fitted into place. The insert is an overlap design, so there is a little bit of room for error in the cut, and the edges don’t need to be perfect, they simply need to allow the grille insert to fit, without extending past the edges of the overlap. In theory it’s possible to do this job with the bumper on the car, having it off, on a surface you can work with will make the cutting portion easier, not to mention safer since there won’t be anything behind the bumper that could be accidentally punctured.
With the running horse inserted into the grille, the insert can now be pressed into place being held there by the supplied adhesive. From here owners simply need to reinstall their bumper cover, and the installation is complete. This upgrade enhances the appearance and cooling of any late model Mustang using a GT bumper cover.
