Ford’s Special Vehicles Team, or SVT, has been modifying Blue Oval vehicles for some twenty years. While not well known their actual first package was simply a gold trim pack for the Linconln Mark VIII, with a promise that the fun stuff was coming.  The first vehicle SVT ever modified for performance was a Mustang, and their badge has graced the Ford F-150, Focus, and even the short-lived Contour, delivering a performance boost to otherwise bland vehicles. Not that the Mustang has ever been bland, however, the SVT team has always bestowed some insane performance upon America’s favorite pony car.

This video takes a look back at some of the most popular SVT vehicles and concepts, like the 10-liter BOSS and the ethanol-powered Super Stallion, just a couple of the incredble Mustangs to wear the SVT badge.

The 10-liter BOSS Mustang was a concept too wild for the real world, boasting twice the displacement as a production Mustang with some 850 horsepower and 800 ft-lbs of torque going to the rear wheels. While Ford executives didn’t have the cajones to put such a wild car into production, the SVT team was able to deliver track-capable cars like the Cobra R to eager customers.

Another favorite SVT project was the ethanol-burning Super Stallion, which utilized a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 capable of burning corn-derived alcohol fuel or regular gasoline. It was a very recognizable car that made a ton of horsepower while still getting to claim some green credentials.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the terminator Cobras of 03-04, still renowned for their durability and output. The 662 horsepower Shelby GT500, is the one that takes the prize though, the most powerful Mustang ever put into production. just 38 horsepower shy of 700 ponies, it’s dollar-for-dollar the best horsepower value in the world. Maybe the V in SVT should stand for value instead of vehicle.
