When the new Shelby GT350 made its debut in late 2015, many of us had a hunch that this Mustang — even in its naturally aspirated form from the factory — would be one of the baddest cars that the Blue Oval would ever release. Fortunately, we were all correct, as the latest GT350 is good for more than 526 horsepower, thanks to its 5.2-liter Voodoo V8.
But what happens when you introduce forced induction into the mix? Time and time again, we’ve seen that the big, bad Shelby loves boost – whether it’s in the form of two turbochargers or a single supercharger. And, as we’ve seen in the video above from David Patterson, whose online handle is “ThatDudeInBlue,” it only takes 8 pounds of boost to make more than 850 horsepower.
That power figure comes courtesy of the folks at Injected Engineering out of Kennesaw, Georgia, who specialize in Ford and Mopar applications. This shop fitted the Lightning Blue Shelby with a Hellion Power Systems twin-turbo kit, a Fore Innovations fuel system, a set of Injector Dynamics ID1000 fuel injectors and, of course, a custom Injected Engineering calibration tying everything together.
On the first go-around, the car putdown a respectable 698 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels on just 7 pounds of boost using 93-octane fuel. Injected Engineering says, while there’s plenty of power left on the table, about 7-8 pounds of boost is the perfect amount for the stock internals. Not to fear, as we’ve seen what a GT350 can do when the bottom-end has been built.
