With the New York Auto Show just a week away, major OEM’s are getting ready to roll out their latest and greatest concepts and creations for public indulgence. But it isn’t just the big-name automakers that will be rolling out cars. Many smaller companies and aftermarket automakers will also be on hand, among them Shelby American.

Shelby has put out a press release announcing that a new car will soon join their lineup. If you guessed it was anything but a Mustang, you guessed wrong. What we’re getting is the 2012 Shelby 1000, so named because it is available with up to 1,100 horsepower.

From what we can tell it looks like previous Super Snake models, save for the deep-dish wheels and the “1000” badges on the side and between the tail lights. But in order to handle 950 horsepower in street trim, of 1,100 horsepower in the S/C track version, Shelby had to bolster the suspension. Also on tap was bigger brakes, a heavy-duty one-piece driveshaft, and a 9-inch rear end.

Though there had been speculation regarding a twin-turbo Shelby, it seems Carroll and crew have stuck to what they know by going with a supercharger system. We don’t know what tricks they used to get the 2013 Shelby GT500 from 650 horsepower to the magic 1,000 mark, but we’re sure all will be revealed at next week’s auto show. We do know that at the very least, new rods, pistons, and crankshaft are in order. The cost for all of this is $149,900…after you pat for a $55,000 Shelby GT500. Ouch.

We can’t say we’re surprised or disappointed by a 1,000 horsepower Super Snake…though something different might be nice for once. Agree or disagree?
