Despite the fact that he’s stationed over in England as the Director of Powertrain Engineering Europe, Ford vet and longtime racer Brian Wolfe made the trip to Milan Dragway in Michigan last weekend to race in the Liberty’s Gears All Motor class in the dragway’s well-known monthly Heads Up event. As Wolfe was one of the driving forces behind the Mustang revolution way back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, it’s great to see him back on the track, even if it is on a limited basis.
In a field full of backhalf, four-link cars rolling on 29-inch-tall slicks, Wolfe got it done all night long as the only stock-suspension car on 28-inch-tall tires. The car is maintained by Dave Zimmerman and the crew at Team Z Motorsports in Michigan and was ready to roll when Wolfe arrived in town.
“Brian had the field covered to the eighth-mile; we’ve got his car working great on the small tire, and it’s hard for the other cars to run him down when he’s so quick on the front half,” Zimmerman said. Wolfe qualified third in a tough field of cars; Team Z had three racers in the top five during qualifying. Wolfe is currently sitting third in the points standings after two races with four events still to come. Milan runs the Heads Up events on the first Friday night monthly between May and October.
In the semifinal round, Wolfe took out Rocko Khoury with an 8.20 to Khoury’s 8.14 on a stout holeshot win, and then found himself against Vince Khoury in the final round. There, Wolfe turned in an 8.215 at 165.50 MPH to Khoury’s 8.226 at 171.14 MPH – a killer final round on a killer night of racing.
