If you frequent these pages enough, then you know we don’t condone street racing. We still find it cool however, to watch a Mustang, that we often consider an underdog take on and beat, or at least be evenly matched against a car that costs double or even triple the price.
Such is the case in the video presented here by That Racing Channel. A Fox body with a “built” 331 engine, and an 88mm single turbo hanging off the exhaust manifolds, is taking on a 2014 Viper with twin 67mm snails. Keep in mind the Viper weighs in with a whopping 10 cylinders and better than 150 cubic inches more displacement than the Fox. Both cars are said to make around 1,100 horsepower. The snake is equipped with the factory six-speed gearbox, the pony on the other hand is running a 4R70W.
In the video we’re witness to three races. The guy in the Viper is riding solo, while the Fox is said to have a 230 pound passenger on board to handle calling out the race start, and it looks like handle the camera duties.
All of the races are incredibly close, and it looks like both cars struggle to put down the power, as well as the Viper having some issues catching each successive gear. It could be the massive amount of torque and RPM is having a lock-out effect on his ability to shift.
The first two races appear to go to the Mustang. Then it’s noted that both cars turn up the boost, although we’re unsure of exactly how much boost they’re turning things up to. The Viper is claimed to go to 11, while the Fox is unknown. It looks like once again with the boost turned up both cars are still pretty evenly matched.
Given that the Fox body can be had for such a low entry price, and the Viper is a six-figure car before the turbos, it’s nice to see that even though more than 20 years have passed since it was in production, a properly equipped Fox body can still hang with the big dogs.
