Making a Shelby GT350 or GT350R sound even better than it already does from the factory isn’t an easy task, but the folks at American Racing Headers have accomplished it this year with their full-length exhaust system; and the horsepower gains that it delivers are phenomenal.
“It’s a very similar system that we make for the Coyote platform, but much beefier,” Nick Filippides, president of American Racing Headers told us. “Normally, where we would downsize an exhaust system to 2.5 inches after the X-pipe. This system maintains a full 3-inch exhaust. We used a heavier wall, 304-grade stainless steel construction to be able to withstand the additional vibration from the GT350’s flat-plane crank. The entire exhaust system had to be upgraded in order to combat that vibration.”
ARH offers its long-tube headers in both 1 7/8-inch and a full 2-inch style. Nick told us that Shelby enthusiasts can expect to make 30 horsepower with this system before even adding a tune.
“These GT350s need headers desperately,” he added. “We did a lot of research and development when it comes to sound on the GT350, as these Mustangs come standard with an active exhaust from the factory. We designed the system with a plug-in adapter [which is included] that installs into the factory harness that allows for both the Sport and Track modes to be retained. If you don’t have an adapter for these settings, you’ll lose those modes.”
He added that the full system includes both mufflers and resonators, as well as an X-pipe. This design provides a higher flowing system which won’t drone–but for folks who track their Shelbys, ARH does allow for the resonators to be removed. The ARH Shelby GT350 long-tubes are available as part of a complete exhaust system, which can be optioned with or without resonators.
